When Trying is no longer enough…
The world beyond trying is doing. We learned that from Yoda. The world beyond doing is freedom and the field of all potential. In Creative Process, we allow ourselves to try new things and find out so very much. Yet I recently realized that, like brainstorming, trying can become a bit of a sand trap. It has a limitation built in if it is not used as an exploratory word. Trying something that scares me is laudable, but trying to succeed is limiting. “Trying” is a fact finding mission. It is a means to gather information that then gets balanced with experience, becomes wisdom and in the end leads me to informed, inspired action. To try something that I am unsure of leads me to a place of familiarity. To try that same thing over again is unnecessary. Here are the questions I ask myself after I try something… Was it positive? Did it leave me with the feeling that there is more to do? Did I overcome a block or fear? Did I find myself with a greater awareness? If I have answers that are satisfying to me then “Trying” is over and Wisdom has arrived. Wisdom uses the information gathered to implement new strategies.
We’ve all had the experience of trying to start a car with a flooded engine. We turn the key and hear the ignition grind and whirl to no effect. No real result. Trying it again only stalls the desired effect of feeling the engine roar to life. Too much trying can do that to my Creative Process. It floods the synapses with too many attempts at the same thing. Wisdom tells us that trying again only complicates the matter.
Trying has its place as a means to gather information and knowledge that evolves into wisdom. Wisdom based on trying gives us the keys to the field of all potential. That’s what I’m talkin’ about!
